About the station

The second biggest city of Azerbaijan Ganja located – southern-east of Small Caucasus foothill, Ganja-Gazakh plain and on both side of river Ganja.

In XII century Ganja nas been exposed with two strong eathquakes. In 1139 after earthquake Ganja was devastated and 250 000 people was died. One of the peaks of Kapaz Mountain flew down and blocked the flow of Akhsu river thereby created the Goygol lake. In terms of seismicity Ganja was always active. Here in 427 year was strong and destructive 10 magnituded earthquake. According to historical evidences, the earthquake caused a lot of destruction and human victims. Also in result of 9 magnituded earthquake in 1139 was created Goy-gol lake, in 1235 year 8 magnituded earthquake occured.

The ancient city Ganja, in 1918, in the short term, was the capital of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Ganja city, also known by the name of the great Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi. Great Nizami Ganjavi’s tomb located here. 

The Gandja seismic station has been operating since 1954.
